After 53 years on the Great Ocean Road starting with the original iconic Chris's in Lorne in 1972 and taking on Beacon Point in 1978, it is with deep emotion that we make it known that Chris's Beacon Point Restaurant & Villas has been sold to the Memishi family. We wish them every success in taking the business forward.
Our suppliers, some of which we have been doing business with since the 70's which range from fish suppliers to wine growers and a lot in between. We thank you for your support and friendship.
Of course the biggest thank you goes out to the staff of Chris's. In over five decades many people have worked at Chris's in Lorne and Apollo Bay. They have come from every corner of the globe and many of them have gone on to achieve wonderous things. Twenty years ago it was not unusual for someone to say my "mother or father worked at Chris's". Now it's more like: "My grandmother or grandfather!" A personal touch to hospitality was never possible without these people and it was these people that made Chris's the institution that it became. Through moves from Lorne to the Bay and fires and...everything else. Our deepest thanks to you.
Last and certainly not least, we would like to thank our loyal customers who have supported us over the years- the decades! We have made it our aim to bring a personal touch to hospitality and in the course of this endeavour many of you have become from friendly acquaintances to lifelong friends. We wish you all well and thank you for your support and custom.
Overlooking Bass Strait, set high in the Otways above the Great Ocean Road, Chris's Beacon Point Restaurant and Villas has become a Mecca for gourmet travellers. His personal approach to hospitality has made him one of the best-loved characters in the region and his passion for the food of Southern Europe combined with the freshest and purest produce has made his cuisine world famous.
Chris’s Beacon Point Restaurant opened in 1979 along much the same lines as his original, much loved and lauded “Chris’s Restaurant” down the Great Ocean Road in Lorne, now long gone.
In those days Apollo Bay was a quiet fishing village on the fringe of the Western District, with little in the way of fine dining. Chris, with his emphasis on the fabulous freshly caught seafood of the ‘Bay’ along with his trademark Mediterranean cooking with a Greek accent, has done a lot to change that.
The original pinewood and glass dining room, seating 30, was extended over the years until it held 120 on two levels. In May 2003 it was totally destroyed by fire. Chris built a new “Chris’s” on the ashes of the old, and reopened on Christmas Day 2003.
These days the Great Ocean Road has an international profile and is one of Australia’s top tourist destinations, and Apollo Bay is booming. With Apollo Bay’s transformation, so too has Chris’s become an icon of the Great Ocean Road.
